The Secret Life of Herm

by Herm, Tuesday 28 September 2010 11:25

As part of the Guernsey Autumn Walking Week, Lesley Bailey offered two walks on Herm which took participants off the beaten track to see parts of Herm not normally open to the public.  Both walks were well attended and the rain stayed away which meant that Herm was seen at it’s best!  During the walk Lesley told the group a little bit about tenants who have lived on Herm in the past and what it is like to live on Herm now.

Beachwatch on Herm

by herm, Wednesday 22 September 2010 13:14

For the past 9 years the beaches of Herm Island have been cleared of rubbish over the third weekend in September as part of the national Beachwatch campaign organised by the Marine Conservation Society.  This year regular holiday makers to Herm, Jean and Phil Reeves, Jonathan and Shirley Hancock and Russell Clay once again volunteered to help clear rubbish.  They were joined by the children of Herm school who cleared Belvoir during their school day.  Four year 8 geography students from Elizabeth College gave up their Saturday morning to come over to Herm to clear Shell and North Beaches.  The rubbish that is collected has to be logged and the information is then sent to the MCS for analysis.

This year a total of 26.74kg of rubbish was cleared from Herm beaches!  This included a wheel found on North Beach that weighed 13.6kg.  The most exciting find this year was a 1952 halfpenny coin found on Belvoir by India.

Mr & Mrs Janse Van Vuuren of Herm

by Herm, Monday 20 September 2010 07:07

Herm’s Estate Foreman, William Janse Van Vuuren married Jenny Wilson on Friday 17th September at St. Martin’s Church, Guernsey.  The reception took place at St. Pierre Park Hotel and many Herm residents joined them to help them celebrate.

Guests were impressed when Will showed off his hidden talent.  Will, from South Africa, used to do ballroom dancing so over the past few months has been teaching Jenny to dance.  During the first dance they looked beautiful gliding around the dance floor together!

Herm says another farewell

by Herm, Monday 13 September 2010 07:10

This time the farewell was to Estate Foreman Gavin Hyde who is moving to take up a job at Sacrewell Farm & Country Centre, near Peterborough.  It was farewell Herm style as we all gathered at Rosaire Steps to wave him off.  Gavin is an outdoor man and could often be seen on Herm dressed in camouflage hiding in the hedges.  It is thanks to him that Herm now has a colony of bees.  Gavin is a third generation beekeeper and was keen to impart his knowledge to other Hermites so there are now four hives on the island.

Will Janse Van Vuuren is taking over the role of Estate Foreman.

Back to school for the Herm students

by Herm, Saturday 11 September 2010 10:50

After a mixed bag of weather in August it turned sunny in September just as the Herm students had to go back to school.  For six of them it means weekly boarding on Guernsey so they have to be up early on a Monday morning to get the boat across the Little Russel.  The children who go to Herm school can stay in bed a bit longer as they have to wait for their teacher to arrive from Guernsey on the first boat!

Nigel & Lucie get married

by Herm, Monday 6 September 2010 06:40

On Saturday 4th September 2010 Nigel Waylen married Lucie de Guerin.  Nigel first moved to Herm to be head chef at The Mermaid Tavern but is now head chef at The White House Hotel.  The couple met through their involvement with the Sea Cadets on Guernsey and chose to get married in St. Tugual’s Church on Herm.  Reverend Bellinger officiated at the ceremony.  The weather was beautiful and the sun shone for the happy couple.  They travelled in style down the hill from the church to the harbour with Mikey at the wheel of the tractor!
