The rain held off and the sun came out for the fifty-three walkers who took part in the Herm World Aid Walk on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May. There was a happy atmosphere at Herm harbour as the participants started the 5.25 mile figure eight route around the island. Some of the walkers came across on the 08.30 boat from Guernsey and Travel Trident donated half of their fare to the six World Aid Walk charities. The rest of the walkers were made up of Herm residents, guests staying at the White House Hotel or holiday cottages and campers. So far the 53 walkers have pledged to raise over £1000 for World Aid Walk. A brilliant amount – well done and thank you to all those who took part.

It’s that time of year when all sailings to Herm from Guernsey on the Trident ferry are FREE! Today was the first day of four weekends of FREE boats. Check out the Gift Shop page on the Herm website for details of boat times and to download your Crew/Weird Fish voucher which can be redeemed against your purchase. http://www.herm.com/gift-shops/
It’s all hands on deck to help out in the Mermaid Tavern and Gift Shops during the Christmas shopping weekends as all the seasonal staff have left. It’s an opportunity for the island teenagers to earn some spending money and for Herm mums to do some paid work while the dads look after the children!

Sunday 14th August saw a team from The Mermaid Tavern organise the 4th fun day raising money for local charity ‘Help A Guernsey Child’. All the money raised stays in the islands benefiting local children and young people who may not be eligible for support from other charities. The event was held in Moss Field which was the venue for the Lords Taverners cricket match last month. After a dull start the sun came out so parents could sit and relax while their children played on the bouncy castles, had their faces painted and ate burgers! £2800 was raised.
Hermite Maya George had her own stall raising funds for Help A Guernsey Children, the GSPCA and the starving in East Africa. She had cleared out her toy cupboard and in doing so raised £86.20.

The directors of Herm Island Ltd usually gather for breakfast meetings but this week they were all in the pub early evening for the launch of Herm’s own ale, ‘Herm Gold’. The idea for the ale came about after the very successful real ale festival which was held at The Mermaid Tavern in May. Drinkers enjoyed the festival so much that Tom Jones, manager of The Mermaid Tavern got together with the brewers from the Liberation Group to create a new ale just for Herm. The resulting light fruity beer will always be on offer at The Mermaid Tavern. Come along and give it a try!

Jonathan Watson, Director of Hospitality on Herm is in training for the round Guernsey kayak which will take place later this year. Jonathan bought himself a kayak last year and has enjoyed exploring Herm from the sea but decided he needed more of a challenge. Along with 20 others from Guernsey he signed up for the round Guernsey kayak. As part of their training the group came to Herm on a warm, calm day to kayak twice round the island.
Jonathan is raising money for World Vision. If you would like to help Jonathan reach his target of £5000 click here https://www.justgiving.com/jonathanwatson2011/

Guests who stayed at The White House Hotel for the final weekend of the 2010 season were treated to two nights of set gourmet menus with a glass of wine to accompany each course. Following dinner on the Friday evening guests were entertained by Karen Noble who sang the hits of Barbra Streisand and Dusty Springfield. On the Saturday evening John Ellis performed as Elton John and had everyone on their feet to enjoy a dance while he sang. Hermite Rachel Tracey volunteered to join ‘Elton’ in singing ‘Don’t Go Breaking Your Heart’.
If you enjoy the tribute band evenings make a note in your diary now for next years events. A Beatles tribute band will be singing on Herm 18th & 19th May 2011 and Robbie Williams tribute act on 7th & 8th September 2011.
