The rain held off and the sun came out for the fifty-three walkers who took part in the Herm World Aid Walk on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May. There was a happy atmosphere at Herm harbour as the participants started the 5.25 mile figure eight route around the island. Some of the walkers came across on the 08.30 boat from Guernsey and Travel Trident donated half of their fare to the six World Aid Walk charities. The rest of the walkers were made up of Herm residents, guests staying at the White House Hotel or holiday cottages and campers. So far the 53 walkers have pledged to raise over £1000 for World Aid Walk. A brilliant amount – well done and thank you to all those who took part.

The Herm bees are now in their 4th year of production and when the Herm honey is on sale in the Herm Gift Shops it disappears off the shelves very quickly. Ben Makemson (his day job is island maintenance engineer, helping keep plumbing, electrics and the internet running smoothly) is in charge of the bees. This winter he has had the help of 15 year-old Hermite Will Knight who has taken on the skill of learning beekeeping for his bronze Duke of Edinburgh award.

Dominating the Guernsey news recently has been the general election which took place on April 18th 2012. Herm come under the parish of St. Peter Port South but for those Hermites who hadn’t registered for a postal vote it meant a trip to Guernsey to the polling station.
When you live on an island things aren’t always so straightforward. The weather on voting day was south westerly winds blowing up to force 8/9 which meant that Travel Trident only had one sailing across to Herm. By late afternoon the wind had changed to a westerly and calmed down slightly so four Hermites keen to use their votes made a special trip to St. Peter Port on the island boat ‘Little Herm’.

All the Herm children were late for school on the first day of the summer term. The six students (pictured left) who weekly board usually get an early boat so that they arrive at school in time for registration. This morning the wind was too strong and the sea too rough for the boat to cross the Little Russell at 7.30am. Three hours later the wind had calmed so they didn’t miss too much school.
The eight children who go to Herm school had a late start too as they had to wait for their teacher to arrive. Mrs Carey comes to Herm each day from Guernsey.

The children of Herm School have joined in the GSPCA cupcake fundraising week and raised £40. The children were all encouraged to bring in some cupcakes to sell and they also spent the morning decorating some which had been brought in by Herm school teacher Mrs. Mary Carey. The children will hand over the money they have raised when they visit the GSPCA next term.
Pictured are all the children of Herm school with the last few cupcakes: Catrin, India, Morgan, Brandon, Ffion, Eden, Elliot and Ryan.

This isn’t something you see every day! The Reverend Richard Bellinger visits Herm one Sunday a month to hold a service in St. Tugual’s Chapel. Last autumn he held a Harvest Festival to which he invited all the island animals.
The children were delighted to bring their pets, and Alex the guinea pig, Davey the rabbit, Sparkle the cat and Doodle the cockerel were very well behaved for the duration of the service.
As a special surprise for the children, there was a guest appearance from the island goats, Sweetpea and Honeybun. It was a brief visit, as they are too big and restless to be cooped up in church. Helped by Lesley Bailey, Reverend Bellinger led the goats through the front door, past the altar and out to the courtyard.
Slightly shaky photos taken from a precarious position on the altar!

There will be more trained first aiders on Herm this year. The idea is to have as many 'first responders' as possible in each department. The role of a first responder is to help the patient as much as possible in the time between the incident being reported and the arrival, if necessary of paramedics from Guernsey.
Graham Le Maitre (pictured standing on the right of the photo) from St.John Ambulance and Rescue came over for several days to instruct the trainees. This will be followed up by an written exam over the next few weeks, and several practical assessments.
This year there will be first responders among the staff at the White House Hotel and Mermaid Tavern, as well as much of the service team and both gardeners. All the island's special constables and many of the fire team are now trained first aiders.

Two teams from Herm took part in the Guernsey Mud ‘n’ Fun run. After a very wet morning the sun came out just in time for the start so the run was slightly more pleasant than it might have been if it had been pouring with rain. Getting wet was the least of the teams worries though as the run involved wading through muddy ditches, some of them more than waist height in mud the consistency of thick soup, marching through marshy fields and negotiating muddy obstacles.
The run takes place every two years and is around four miles long. The first Hermite home was 17 year-old Richard who got round in a speedy time of 51 minutes. The ‘Herm Chicks’ couldn’t linger too long on the course as there was only two hours from the start of the race until the boat left for Herm! They got round in 1 1/2 hours which left just enough time for a very quick shower before getting the boat home. Fun was had by all!

This pictures were taken from a Herm holiday brochure from 1947, and offer a fascinating insight into how the island has developed over the past 65 years.
The 34-page brochure has photos of well known fixtures such as the White House Hotel and the harbour, and the short-lived golf course. The photo of the Mermaid Tavern actually shows the hotel rooms in the Mermaid Cottages and states that there are tea gardens in the back and a paddock next door. The paddock contains a ‘mini Grand National Course’ to exercise the island’s 12 donkeys!
At the time, there was both ‘White House and Mermaid hotels’. Bookings for holidays were taken in the Herm office in Guernsey, and there was a cafe at the pier in St Peter Port that only catered to Herm visitors.
Passports weren’t needed, but all guests had to bring their ration books. There is also an ad for 'Bobby Ale', which is apparently what all good Hermites were drinking in 'the old inn'!
