It is during the winter months that the island gardeners can get stuck into new projects. One of the projects for this year is the revamp of the church garden. This is an ideal opportunity for new Herm resident and assistant gardener, Roseanne Wheeler to put all that she has learnt into practice. Rosie graduated this year from Writtle College with a BSc in Landscape & Garden design.
The church garden is where the new Herm daffodil is going to be planted. Horticulturist, Rae Beckwith began nurturing the Herm daffodil in 2001. After visiting Herm as a judge for the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition he decided to name the daffodil after Herm.

It isn’t the start of the Christmas season until the school Nativity. Islanders gathered in St. Tugual’s Chapel where the story of Jesus has traditionally been acted out on the altar step for the past 50 years.
With eight children to cover the many roles, there is always a bit of artistic license. This year’s was billed as a ‘traditional Nativity’, although one of the wise men was played by a puppet, and there were homages to entrepreneurs Alan Sugar and Richard Branson, hence the title, ‘The Virgin Connection’.
The all-singing, all-dancing children, aged from 4 to 11, put on a great evening’s entertainment, and brought a lovely beginning to the festive season.

Last winter there was an extensive renovation project in St. Tugual’s Church. There wasn’t time to complete all the work before visitors started arriving on Herm in the spring. As soon as the hotel closed for this winter work re-started on St. Tugual’s. The electricians have been and they were closely followed by the decorators.
The bones that were found during the digging for the drainage soakaway are now being studied by Guernsey based Jenny Cataroche who is an osteoarchaelogist. Jenny works full-time for the states of Guernsey as an epidemiologist so in her spare time is working on the 38 skeletons that were found in the garden adjacent to the church. Despite the poor state of the bones she hopes to be able to find out how old someone was when they died, how old the bones were and if the person had an illness such as arthritis or serious abscesses. It takes about eight hours to analyse each skeleton, so details of the Herm finds might not be revealed until the middle of next year.

It was a very special occasion at St. Tugual’s Church when the Bishop of Southampton, The Right Reverend Jonathan Frost and Reverend Richard Bellinger conducted a service of baptism and confirmation for some Herm residents. After the service the congregation gathered at the home of Juliet and Neil for celebration coffee and cakes.
