Acorn Planting

by herm, Wednesday 30 November 2011 15:19

On Sunday morning, islanders got together for a mass acorn planting.

A little while ago, a huge Oak tree behind the White House Hotel was being pollarded, which means cutting off the top and branches to encourage new growth. Whilst this was being done, a huge amount of acorns were dislodged. The gardening team duly collected these for future use.

Planting each and every one of the 467 acorns would be a time-consuming job for the two gardeners, Brett Moore and Rosie Wheeler, so they called in reinforcements.

23 islanders turned out on a drizzly Sunday morning to meet at the potting shed, and individually pot each acorn. With all hands on deck, it took little more than an hour.

It is this community spirit that keeps the island together, and the added incentive of refreshments and cakes doesn’t hurt.

Lovely to see the island spirit. I hope a number of them will be planted on Herm as it would be a change from coniferous.

The idea is to nurture them within the confines of the gardener's potting shed area and once they are big enough plant them  in suitable locations around the island.
