Belvoir beach is part of the Marine Conservation Society’s Adopt-a-beach scheme so every 3 months a team of willing volunteers go down to the beach armed with gloves, bin bags and clip boards. Before each piece of rubbish is put in the sack it needs to be identified and logged so that the statistics can be analysed by the Marine Conservation Society. During the February half-term holiday those children who weren’t away from the island spent a busy hour collecting rubbish. When we first went onto the beach it looked as if it was clean and that we weren’t going to find much but a surprising 2.5kg was found. At this time of year the majority of the rubbish has been washed up and because it had been a very high tide for a few days it was all caught in the rocks at the top of the beach. Two year olds Harry and Ethan joined in too and were delighted to find 5 different balls amongst the rocks!
It was made more exciting by the presence of a film crew from Channel TV! They were on Herm filming a news piece about the skeleton found in the Manor garden and did a small piece about the beach clean. The children enjoyed being interviewed by Channel TV presenter Alice Humphry whilst Andy the camera-man filmed them.
