The resident’s of Herm Island helped celebrate the launch of the RHS Britain in Bloom and RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood campaigns by being part of a tree planting movement to double the native trees and woods in the UK.
This year, RHS Britain in Bloom has teamed up with the Woodland Trust to giveaway up to 200,000 free tree saplings to be planted by communities across the UK.
As part of the project Herm were given 400 saplings so last weekend islanders gathered in Fisherman’s Field to help plant them. The weather was glorious so all who turned up enjoyed the social gathering especially as they were rewarded by coffee and cakes made by Jana at break time!
The trees, which included rowan, cherry, birch, blackthorn and hazel, have been planted closely together. The idea is that they will eventually form a hedge to shelter the field which is often used by scout and guide camping groups or company team building games.
