Tree Cutting and Renewable Fuel

by herm, Friday 9 December 2011 09:52

Campsite warden Darren Gwynne and estate worker Mark Latter are spending the winter working as the island's resident lumberjacks. A big part of the work has been taking the tops off sycamore and pine trees. These branches grow back quickly, thus providing a renewable source of fuel. The wood has been chopped up to make firewood so less coal can be used island-wide.

One big project coming up is the removal of an huge pine tree that blew down in May Queen Woods. Once the tree is cleared, the area can be replanted.

So far this winter several tons of wood have been cut for use at the Mermaid Tavern and in the self-catering cottages.

Excellent. This is something I would have had in place as standard practice ever since first visiting the island (if I had been "Mr. Herm").  Besides, in my opinion there is nothing better than the aroma of wood smoke in a country setting.
