Hermite Richard Bailey has lived on Herm since he was a baby when his parents, Andrew and Lesley, moved to the island so that Andrew could begin work as the island accountant. Although Richard has had many holidays and school trips away from Herm he has always had a yearning to do something different. When the opportunity arose to apply for a place to go to the Arctic with the British Schools Exploring Society, he jumped at the chance and was thrilled to be accepted.
Richard needs to pay for his trip to the Arctic so to supplement the money he has already saved by working at the Herm campsite in the summer and washing up at the Mermaid Tavern in the winter he organised a community fund-raising night. With the help of his Mum, Richard served up six different curries to over 40 islanders!
As it is Seville orange season he has spent the past few weekends making jars of marmalade which he intends to sell to help raise some more money.
